Homework

I have a first grader.  On Fridays he comes home with a homework packet that is due the following Friday.  I can think of about a million things that B would rather do than homework.  However, if there is a science experiment or math in there he is game.  But spelling words?  He'll do that last.  Writing sentences?  Forget it.  Write an ENTIRE story with characters, a setting, and 20 adjectives - his eyes glaze over.

I thought I was alone in my homework struggles.  But tonight, at a classmate's birthday party, I discovered that EVERY mother of a son in B's class has the same struggles with writing.  Their boys cry, they moan, they complain.  I am not the only mother who quickly flips through the packet and rejoices when she finds analogies, patterns, math, and crossword puzzles.

I thought my homework days were done when I graduated from college.  I have paid my dues.  But here I am, back in the homework business.  How long does it last?  At what age (or grade) will he whip out his homework on his own and get it done without me having to hound him?  Please say Second Grade.
