This is where my Hubby (lovingly) calls me a Hippy

As I mentioned in my last post I had made my own laundry detergent from scratch.  I have had the opportunity to use it this week and for the most part it works great.  Our clothes (and sheets and towels) come out of the wash clean and it seems as though our whites are a bit whiter.  In all of my research, I found that the recipe is pretty much the same across the board.  Borax, washing soda (arm and hammer) and bar soap with Ivory, Zote, and Fels-Naptha being the most popular.  I decided to use Fels-Naptha as it is marketed as a laundry bar soap.
Here is the ratio I used:

2 cups of grated bar soap, 1 cup of Borax, and 1 cup of Washing Soda.

I grated the bar soap using my cheese grater and then I dumped it into my food processor to pulverize it.  I wanted to make sure that it dissolved in my front loader.  Then I mixed everything together and threw it into a container.  I use 1 or 2 tablespoons per load depending on how big/dirty it is.  After all my math was said and done, the batch I made would do about 64 loads of laundry and it would cost me 3 cents per load.  Talk about frugal!  Making your own detergent is definitely easy on the wallet.

I will say that I do not like the fragrance of the Fels-Naptha.  It is very strong and the ingredient list on the label is not very forth-coming.  I did buy some Dr. Bonner's castile bar soap that I am going to try next.  In fact, I don't like the Fels-Naptha so much that I might toss out this batch and make a new one with the castile soap.  I will be sure to post the results as I am sure you are all dying to know.
